Is your job search or potential-for-promotion really all about who you know? Maybe it’s about who knows you. You have got to be talking with real human beings to make any progress in your search. I know, I know. “I feel like I’m bugging them.” “I can’t find anyone’s contact information.” “They won’t call me back.” I hear these statements from alumni all the time, and the truth is that self-imposed limitations and fears are much bigger obstacles in our search than any external forces.
Sure, it’s uncomfortable to talk with strangers until you get to know them. That’s the point. Practice building relationships with people and those skills will help you get much further in life than just to your next job or promotion.
Let’s give you an easy starting point–
The UGA Alumni Career Fair is June 9th from 11am-3pm. More than 70 phenomenal companies, grad schools, government agencies, and entrepreneurial opportunities will be in one room, just for UGA grads! Top it off with hundreds of other UGA alumni in attendance, and you can’t help but meet someone new. You’ll be surprised at how much you have in common with other graduates, regardless of when you were in college. You’ll also notice that people are very willing to help another Bulldog if they can. You’ll probably discover some ways that you can help others, too.
You won’t know if you don’t go, and “who you know” won’t know you if you don’t show. Be there.
“Eighty percent of success is showing up.” Woody Allen
